Introduction: Nowadays the relationships between work and non-work are very imbalanced in the world. According to Pleck (1980), working stress or family conflict may have negative impact on employee work performance and productivity. In this essay, I will illustrate some reasons why these imbalanced phenomena appear and the influences brought by these phenomena at first and then critically evaluate the theories of Parker and spill-over cost-benefit.

In a lot of families, fathers work outside most of the time and seldom stay at home to keep their wives and children company. The main aim of spending most time in working is to earn as much money as possible in order to make a living. But it is very stressful and tired working all day. Hence, the physical condition of these fathers get worse. As to the psychological aspect, they become unhappy and impatient. Because of lack of communication between relatives and family members, quarrel and fighting are very easy to happen and the relationships between each other will get more and more distant. If people work in a poor physical condition and poor mood, the efficiency will be very low. It will form a vicious cycle over time. So the companies have duties to reduce these negative influences.
Kim, kim & kim said that companies accept using flexible working arrangement to solve the problems between families and work. I consider that it is a wise decision for employees. Nowadays only a few companies adopt flexible working regulations. Burke (2000) supported that organisational policies designed to reduce employee stress may facilitate job satisfaction and life satisfaction with friends and family, improves the levels of wellbeing. If companies allow employees to go off work at any time and earn the same amount of money, employees will feel very relaxed and always have a good mood, and they will have more time to accompany their families as well as communicate with each other all the time. As a result, the family conflict will be reduced and the relationships between families and friends will be much closer. Apart from it, employees will have fewer physical diseases caused by big pressure such as long-time working. In terms of Frone (2003), work has more negative effects on family than the family has on work. Therefore, reasonable and useful company regulations are very necessary to employees.

A man called Parker (1982) divided work and non-work relationship into several aspects: work/working time, work related time, existence time, non-work obligations and leisure/free/uncommitted time. But he ignored three factors: work importance for leisure overstated, role of women and activities only. First, there are some obvious factors that influence the leisure choice: personal and family, situational and opportunity. For instance, if parents are very interested in sports, they hope that their children will become excellent athletes. Sometimes conditions of existence also can depend one’s leisure choice. If the gender of the person is female, she might well love dancing or become a model. Second, role of women is also a factor that cannot be ignored. In a majority of families, women serve as housewives at home. They sweep and mop the floor, clean the bedrooms, bathroom and kitchen as well as cook dishes. But the number of women who go out for work is getting more and more at present. Some women can do as well as or even better than men. According to Lambert (1990), although the process that women work is different from that of men, they can produce the same outcome as men. So companies should recruit more women in order that women can play their talents as well as reduce their husbands’ burden.
