Child marriage is one of the biggest rights violation in the world. Child marriage is one such effect of the darker side of society. Adolescent Marriages is any legal or customary between two people where at least one of the parties is below the age 18. A child is portrayed by the CEDAW and CRC Committees as a form of forced marriage, since children-given their age- lack the ability to give full, free and informed consent to their marriage or its timing. The causes of child marriage tends to associate around poverty, gender discrimination, inadequate laws,”protecting” the girls’ sexuality and trafficking.
Child marriage is generally seen as one of the easiest ways established by poor to lower middle class families to make their and their child’s future safe but in almost all the cases, it is not true. It only secures the family from poverty for a short period of time but it destroys the child life forever. With marriage come various issues and problems which the young bride goes through and in most cases they end up dying as they are not strong enough mentally and physically to go through so much pain. It also affects the future generations. The babies born to girls under 16 years of age are more likely to die during their first year of life and if they survive, they aren’t healthy like a child born from a 21 year old woman, and goes through various deformities in the future.
One of the most essential and basic reasons because of which child marriage still exist is education. Studies have shown the important role that education plays in child marriage. Research by UNICEF shows that the more education a girl receives, the less likely she is married as a child. Improving access to education and eliminating gender gaps in education are therefore important strategies for ending the practice of child marriage. It’s clear that if more girls are education they will be aware of the things going around them and can have the power to stand up for themselves and jude between right and wrong.
Even some community and religious leaders are prolonging the issue of child marriage because they are uneducated, without any training on womens rits. Child marriage: “a practice that robs millions of girls of their childhood, their rights, and their dignity. Statistics show that 40% of the world’s child marriages take place in India. Even though child marriages are illegal in India, priest still conduct child weddings, and guest still attend with happiness and excitement. The leality doesn’t seem to affect the people in India, even though one would be cared wit a fine of Rs100,000($1,600 in U.S. Currency) for not preventing or stopping a child marriage. These marriage are still being performed in India, more or less “secretly”.
The main reason why child marriages are being performed throughout India, is directly similar to Afghanistan. The two main reasons are culture, and parents wanting their daughter to be better provided for an older man, because they can’t provide for the type of life they want for their daughter. Yes, they may be getting all the necessary essentials to be surviving, but these young girls are barely living when they have to suffer through the traumatizing effects of being a child bride. Of course, many young girls in India also are forced to having a baby, resulting in death of these young girls and their soon to be child. In India, out of every 1,000 children born due child marriage, 31 died before they reach one.
Test statistic made my heart drop, because in reality so many young girls and newborn babies death can be stopped, if this horrible view of child marriage his put to an end. When researching child marriage in Africa, statistics show that 42% of girls were married before 18. In Africa, parents consider their daughters second-class citizens and see them as a potential source of income.Child marriages are being performed in Africa due to parents wanting to protect their girls from premarital sex and unwanted pregnancy, “which tarnis a family’s honour and may diminish the value of dowry.” South Sudan is known to have the world highest mortality rate, with about 2,054 deaths per 100,00 live birth.
The young women having babies, also don’t have a good chance in living, were as one in serval girl die due to pregnancy at such a young age. Just like Afghanistan, and India, traditional practices play a huge role of why child marriage his stilled performed in Africa. Child marriage is engraved as a ancient tradition. Even though tradition plays a huge role on child marriage, the economic struggle of Africa also comes to play. Child marriage can be blamed on the country’s poorly defined and contradictory laws as well a the governments weak execution and enforcement of them. Overall, I can find some sense into child marriage being blamed on the government weak enforcement, because if the country is facing economic struggles, how can they have enough money and support to have a strong forceful government.
