Communication skills support active listening, expressing sympathy, empathy

Communication is a dynamic process in which communicators are constantly sending and receiving information and, in order for communication to be effective, the information sent must be received as intended (Grover, 2005). For this reason, nurses have an in-depth understanding of the talents that enable effective communication and knowledge to use them consistently. Such skills support active listening, expressing sympathy, empathy and effective verbal and nonverbal communication.

For nurse-patient relationship, the roles of sender(Nurse) and receiver(patient) are shared and information is exchanged through both verbal and nonverbal messages. In turn, the use of communication skills affects the effectiveness of this process, subsequently allowing the formation of therapeutic relationships (Grover, 2005).
