Esther Dowunit 8 1.4Explain how current health and safety legislation, policies and procedures are implemented in own work setting or service.Within my work setting we follow The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. It is the employer’s duty to put policies and procedures into place to ensure that the setting is meeting the standards of The Health and Safety at Work Act and the employee’s duty to make sure these are followed. We follow this act by making sure that the building and environment is clean and safe and well maintained. Equipment must be stored properly and is regularly checked to ensure it is safe.
Hazardous materials and equipment is locked away and we follow the COSHH act. We have systems in place to ensure the safety of children at all times for example, the fire procedure and the accident and illness procedure. All staff members, parent helpers and volunteers are DSL cleared and all members of staff are shown the policies and are expected to sign to say they have read them. There are copies of the policies kept in the staff room for any future reference and any updates will be given and added at staff meetings.
Cross infection is avoided with use of gloves and aprons whilst dealing with bodily fluids and all accidents and incidents are recorded are reported to the correct person. We have numerous first aid trained staff within the school who are able to deal with minor injuries within the setting and a list of these staff is located in the staff room and school office. First aid boxes are located in the office and staff room.
Fire extinguishers are located in the corridors and main large areas such as the dining hall. There are no fire extinguishers in our classrooms as staff are taught to raise the alarm and then retreat to safety with the children not to fight a fire. All Staff members are given guidance on how to protect themselves throughout day to day activities with regards to things like manual handling. The Governors are responsible for checking the school site three times a year to ensure the site is safe and secure and they are responsible for completing the records of such visits.
However it is the Head that takes overall responsibility.
