Friday the 13th is known around the world as an unlucky day and it is believed that bad things happen to people such as, death, tragic occurrences, natural disasters, etc. Friday the 13th usually occurs on once or twice a year this past year it occured on october 13th. The superstition about friday the 13th is that on that day people will have bad luck such as falling down and breaking a bone or car wont start.
There are many other things that come with the superstition such as natural disasters like volcano eruptions and sink holes on the roads. Many people dont go outside or do anything because of the belief that something bad will happen to them. It is believed that the superstition came from where King Philip IV of France arrested hundreds of the knights templar on october 13, 1307.
The knights templar was a powerful religious and military order formed in the 12th century for the defense of the holy land. Some people referred to friday the 13th as doomsday because bad things happen to a lot of people.Friday the 13th has been around for generations and there many bad things that have happened on that day that has made the day unlucky.
One example of someone having bad luck is that a few years ago a man was just walking down the road and he ended up getting struck by lightning and almost died. The day was Friday the 13th January 3, 2013 and it happened at Ouzts1:13pm. The man lived after he was struck by lightning but he was in the hospital for a while but luckily he was ok. Since that happened on friday the thirteenth that man will probably never go out again on that day because he will think bad things will happen to him. When anything bad happens to someone like what happened to that man on friday the thirteenth you would be superstitious about going out on that day because you will be scared something bad will happen. There are many people who have bad luck on this day and when that happens you will believe in the superstition but, if your one of the few who has not had bad luck on friday the thirteenth you might not believe in a superstition that sounds so silly. The superstition has become so famous they have made movies about it. There is this movie called friday the thirteenth it came out in 1980.
The movie is about this masked killer that tries to kill a bunch of kids that try to reopen a old summer camp but he only tries to kill them on friday the thirteenth. The movie inspired the superstition more than many may know because now when people hear of friday the thirteenth they think of the masked killer who killed people on that day and it frightens them. It is not the day that scares people its the idea that if they go out of there house something bad will happen to them because so many people have been hurt on that day that they are afraid something bad will happen to them. Some people do not have to go out on that day because they work their schedule around it. Those who do not believe in the whole bad luck on friday the thirteenth superstition just go about their day and most of the time nothing happens to them and they have good days but their are the few who have extremely bad luck. One example of that would be back in 2000 this guy was driving Ouztsdown the road on friday the thirteenth and his car broke down in the middle of the road. He had to call the cops and a tow truck to come tow his car from the middle of the road.
The man now had this fear that if he went out on friday the thirteenth that something bad would happen so he decided that he would not ever go out on that day again. Some people do not believe in the superstition but they still prefer not to go out on friday the thirteenth because they know that there is a chance something bad will happen. There are people in this world who are scared to leave their house because of the fear something might happen to them. In 2010, a youngboy ended up getting struck by lightning on friday the thirteenth. The young boy got lucky and only had small burns but he was truly scared on that and now everytime friday the thirteenth comes around he will remember what happened to him on that day. A study done at the university of chicago shows that superstitions can influence people who are non-believers. Like for instance people may not believe in all the superstitious beliefs that come with friday the thirteenth but when they hear it or when it comes around they still deep down believe that it is possible for something bad to happen to them on that day.
They say the last supper had a part to play when it comes to why friday the thirteenth is unlucky. The reason for that is because jesus was crucified on a friday and there was 13 people who attended the last supper. Since that day many people were believed to have started fearing friday the thirteenth. There are other biblical events that are believed to have influenced friday the thirteenth. Alex Saberi says”Some biblical scholars also believe Eve tempted Adam with the forbidden fruit on a Friday, and that Abel was slain by his brother Cain on Friday the 13th.”(nationalgeographic.com). The fear of friday the thirteenth has a scientific name it is called Paraskevidekatriaphobia.
When people have this phobia they tend to grit their teeth because they are so scared of that day they do that to make themselves feel better. There is one interesting fact about friday the thirteenth the days on which friday the thirteenth occur repeat on the calendar. Jack Brown says”he February-March-November pattern repeats in a 28-year cycle.
In the 21st century, the cycle began in 2009. In 2015, 6 Ouztsyears later, Friday the 13th occurred in February, March, and November. This won’t happen for 11 more years until 2026 and we’ll have to wait again for 11 years until 2037 to see the February, March, and November trilogy.”(timeanddate.com). Some people believe that it is unlucky to have 13 people seated at the dinner table. They say that having that many people at a dinner table will give you bad luck. David johnson said”It is considered especially unlucky to have 13 people at the table during a meal, such as in Agatha Christie’s mystery novel, Thirteen at Dinner.
During the 1880s, a men’s group that felt superstition was an unhealthy influence on public life held Thirteen Club dinners. Those diners would have doubtless deplored Triskaidekaphobia, which is a fear of the number 13.”(infoplease.com). He is trying to say that when you have 1 people sit and eat at one table you will become unlucky because of the number 1 and how it connects to friday the thirteenth.
Some say a novel made in 1907 had a influence on friday the thirteenth also. The book was written by a man named Thomas lawson and the name of the book was “Friday the Thirteenth”, the book as mainly about telling everyone how friday the thirteenth was bad news and how they should avoid going out on that day. Thomas lawson said in his book “Friday the 13th is bad news.”(mentalfloss.com).
Lawson’s book also mentioned how the stock market crashed on October 13, 1989 on a Friday. He said you should watch out and be worried if friday the thirteenth is in October because something bad could happen to you on that day. Lawson also said “However, if it’s a Friday the 13th in October … be warned.
“(mentalfloss.com). He was saying what i stated earlier how you should be cautious on Friday the thirteenth if it is in the month of OuztsOctober. Friday the thirteenth is also the day heavy metal gore was born which is also known as chords of the black sabbath. David Johnson said “According to heavy metal lore, the genre was born Friday, February 13, 1970, with the UK release of Black Sabbath’s self-titled debut album.

Friday the thirteenth is one of those superstitions nobody thinks about that day is her and once it is here that is when people who are feared of that day start to freak out and act not like they normally would. Another example of bad luck on friday the thirteenth would be in the UK on friday the thirteenth there was more car accidents than any other day that year. When you dot believe in superstitions like this ts hard because when on that day bad things happens to a lot of people and it makes you wonder or not the superstition is actually real.
Another example of a tragedy on friday the thirteenth would be the shooting in a Marriott Hotel parking lot on April 13, 2007. Kattie Little said On April 13, 2007, after someone was shot in a Marriott Hotel parking lot by a security officer for the hotel, he sued several organizations, including Marriott International Administrative Services. The plaintiff was awarded $16.

That was a tragic event that happened that day and if you lived around where that shooting happened then you might be scared to go out on that day again because you might feel you could be the next one to get shot. In 2002 a very bad accident occurred on the thirteenth Kattie Little said “After four family members died in an explosion on Sept.
13, 2002, the owners Ouztsof the rental house where it occurred, Signature Farms and Cherry Trees Farms, were sued. The plaintiff was awarded $14.1 million.”(nbc.
com). On that day the family of the victims suffered a great loss and now everytime friday the thirteenth comes around they will remember what happened to their family on that day.
