I would rate this book as 10 over 10.
I have read books in Philippine Literature, and by far, this is the best ‘perfect book’ I’ve ever read. After reading this masterpiece, my pride for Philippine Literature shot up from hundreds to millions, just like that. And of course, it gained me more sympathy for the history of my country. And yes, I would highly recommend this to others, because this isn’t just a novel of World War II in the Philippines, there’s this overwhelming feature that binds each page, a pleasing magic that makes me stop from whatever I am doing, and makes me slap my face with the book’s brilliance.
Not so much fancy words, simple settings, one-dimensional characters.
