In 1976, Acer Inc. was named as ‘Multitech International’ and started by designing hand-held electronic games and later went on to distribute semi-conductors which they had imported for lower costs from developing countries.
The company was found by Stan Shih Chen Jung and his friends in 1976 with an initial investment of $25,000. In 1981, the company name changed to ‘Acer Inc.’, and became a Taiwanese Multinational hardware and electronics corporations, headquartered in Xizhi, New Taipei City, Taiwan. Their products include desktop PCs, laptop PCs, tablets, servers, storage devices etc.In the early 2000s, Acer implemented a new business model, shifting from a manufacturer to a designer, marketer and distributor of products, while performing production processes via contract manufacturers.
In 2015, Acer was the sixth-largest personal computer vendor in the world. Currently, in addition to its core IT products business, Acer also has a new business entity that focuses on the integration of cloud services and platforms, and the development of smartphones and wearable devices with value-added Internet of Things (IoT) applications.
