In a rich learning environment cognitive, language development, physical and creative are areas that create effective learning. We try to organize activities in these areas to really make a difference teaching the whole child . We try free play and to plan learning experiences and observe the child to scaffold.
CS II a) In the functional area of physical starting from birth, physical development is critical for the human body. Children learn best through physical movement using their large muscles by running, climbing , galloping and jumping to name a few. Their small muscles are used by doing puzzles, tweezers to sort, legos and play dough. An activity we do when we go outside is playing in the playground tag, balls and make up games . Children learn best when they use their 5 senses.
CS II b) In the second functional area of cognitive . We want to get our children’s brains thinking. With cognitive development we challenge our children with puzzles, blocks and word games. Putting puzzles together helps them with their problem solving skills. When we play word games I ask them open-ended questions. We also incorporate math concepts throughout daily activities. Repetition is also something the lead teacher does throughout the day examples included routines, books or tasks . It builds their knowledge and brain development.
CS II c) In the third functional area a young child’s creative development is where students are given some control over their learning . Children learn through play we create a free-flowing creative activities . We give the children time, materials and space to be creative. Reading the book “It’s not a stick was an interesting activity seeing the children’s imagination come to life. It’s important to let the child know there is more than one way to do something . We have to remember that once the child says it is finished the project is finished . Using their imagination the use of drama , music and dance is all creative.
CS II d) In The last functional area of communication/ language development. We have books in the classroom that reflect children’s language and culture. We also have a listening table for children to listen to stories . Whole Group reading is done during story time we use facial expressions and exciting books that keep the children engage. We also hearing the children retell the story they just heard it promotes their language development . One idea we started doing is making it a priority to talk to each child during the day with a meaningful conversation an example is something they are interested in or love. Listening to the child talk and not talking to the child but with the child . We don’t have dual language learners but we do have a Spanish class every Wednesday. If we did we would make them feel confident in learning a new language but also label things in their home language and English. Using complex grammar and rich vocabulary. These interactions benefit children’s variety of language and dual language learners.
In closing I believe children boost physical and intellectual competence through hands-on and sensory activities provided by the teacher .
