My name is Harrison Juma Angonga and I graduated in 2017 from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology with an English-language Bachelor. After four years in the university, I gained skills to analyze and solve mathematical problems, use logical structure of application programming and Mathematical theorems to approach problems, critical thinking was an important pillar in my studies. With a diverse course work study that involved internet programming and web development, I came across my new-found passion; search engine optimization. I want this position because it’s tailored to my competencies, after enough consideration of how I anticipate my future to go, I believe a career should be something that you never grow tired of, that your interest is so deep in you and can never soak up too much knowledge of the subject, I am convinced to make a switch from the field of mathematics and Computer Science to Journalism.

As I studied computing science, I soon began to realize the breadth and depth of information technology’s influence on societies in modern world. I was attracted to social media platforms such as Instagram and YouTube and awed by the potential in content creation in the current social media era. Moreover, I realized I am more passionate about presenting solutions to problems and opened to experimental aspects rather than research and analysis. After I took Web development (I) class in university with a focus in social media and Search engine optimization, I was reminded of my love and aptitude for critical thinking and decided to further knowledge and pursue my passion in the field of Journalism.  The work I find most stimulating allows me to use both my creative thinking and research skills. The buzz on your company is that it rewards people who deliver solutions to substantial problems.

My professional goal is to improve the way people connect for the good of the society. My career objective is to get a challenging position where I can express my ideas and thinking with free mind and full liberty and can use my experience and sharpen my knowledge in journalism. My dream is to create a social network platform that makes relevant information available to indigenous communities in Kenya such as the Maasai community and to people of all backgrounds. After four years of university education, activities in debate club, technology symposiums and a quite significant period in volunteer work, I learned that the most vital element of education is the learning community of engaging members who share the same values and inspire each other in pursuit of greater goals. I aspire to create platforms that connects people beyond socioeconomic, ethnic, national, and cultural groups.

I enjoy learning and I look forward to staying current on new trends and technologies, as well as systems and processes. As my academic record shows, I master new skills and information quickly. This is a perfect job opportunity for me.Here are three reasons I believe the traineeship program at Deutsche Welle is a perfect fit for me. Firstly, the presence of well-known media trainers led by Ramón GarciÍa-Ziemen with his intriguing quote ”journalism as a business” and ”Do what you can do best – link to the rest”, the availability of placements with DW foreign Bureau and international multimedia projects to explore my interests, strengths, and weaknesses.

Secondly, I love Germany and specifically, Northern Germany. For the past one year, I have lived in Hamburg, Germany as a volunteer. I have grown fond of the German culture; punctuality, efficiency of public transport, food especially ”Kartoffel salat” and the historical architecture of many towns. I have travelled across Germany and made many close friendships, I have fallen in love with the German language. It feels like a place I would like to continue to call home for the next one and a half years. Thirdly, Deutsche Welle has a diverse staff population.

This fits me as a graduate of the most diverse University in Kenya and my adventurous, curious and open-minded nature. For example, I aim to develop multimedia projects that experiment the interaction of digital and traditional media, the local and global viewpoints of Deutche Welle news service. My professional background includes a position of IT assistant, where I developed and maintained a database for my then organization, a translator and an IT apprentice as part of my university industrial attachment. I participated in an intra-university debate and was captain of my university basketball team during my senior year. Among friends, I am a mediator who tries to solve conflicts and ease tensions by communicating and bridging the gap between differences using my fluency in four languages and multi-cultures. My skills are derived from the curiosity and affection for people which can yield a synergy effect when combined with technological skills. Traineeship at Deutche Welle will provide a perfect opportunity for me to grow as Journalist and contribute to the program and society with fresh perspectives from a unique background.

Thank you very much for considering my application. I look forward to your positive response. Yours Sincerely,      Harrison J. Angonga
