In this assignment I will explain and justify the need for and the role of discipline within the uniformed public services and them further evaluate the impact of discipline on the uniformed public services. According to the dictionary the definition of discipline is “the practice of training people to obey rules or a code of behaviour, using punishment to correct disobedience”(press, 2018)When the definition of discipline is applied to public services especially those in uniform they have to be well trained and ensure that they have an “obedience to authority whether it may or may not be written law to reinforce it”.In all organisations including uniformed public services there has to be rules and regulations implemented to ensure everyone is safe and comfortable in these environments. Rules allow an organisation to live up to the standards and principles of them, by following the rules implemented it gives the organisation a better image and shows they are serious about what they are representing. Rules in any organisations/place, could be either written laws, or customs or codes that have been adapted and are best suit fit for that organisation.
Every single public service sector in the UK, is regulated/controlled by rules to ensure that: • The services is not being degraded • People are treated equally • Corruption/abuse of power• Lawful orders are followed • Procedures are consistent and standardised To ensure that the rules are being followed, the institutions tend to bring in disciplinary actions this could be either written warnings, verbal warnings or suspension for period of time deemed fix by those in charge of implementing it. Emergency service- Metropolitan Police All police officers within the force, regardless of their rank are considered constables, as this means a person who is authorised to enforce the law even if they are the lowest rank within the force. All the officers within the police force have the exact same purpose and responsibility which is “the protection of life and property, the maintenance of the Queens peace, the prevention and detection of crime, and the prosecution of offenders against the peace”The table below shows the rank structure of the police, which starts from the top of the system down to the lowest rank, police constable.
