The first person I feel that he was a great leader in the real life is George Washington. He was the first President of the United States and also know as Father of Country. At the age of 11 his father died. George Washington entered the army at the age of 21. Married in 1759 with Martha Dandridge Custis Washington, George Washington took care of his extensive plantation in Virginia, until the American Revolution. George Washington is a member of the Secret Society of Freemasonry.
At the age of 33, he choose to favor the people of the state of Virginia who rebelled against the British who issued unfair law according to people of Virginia. He was also in charge of leading Virginia troops. In 1775 he was appointed Higher Commander by the Continental Congress, which is 13th Congress of British colonies. In 1776 the American Independence Revolution and the Continental Congress issued a declaration of independence and broke away from the British Empire.
George Washington’s leadership contributed much to the success of colonies in America for its independence. In 1783 the United Kingdom recognized the independence of the United States, George Washington out of the army. Four years later in 1787 he became Chairman of the Constitutional Convention. In 1789, he was elected unanimously to be the first American President. He ran two positions from 1789 to 1797, accompanied by John Adams as vice president. In his farewell speech in 1797, he called on the people of the United States to abandon the sense of belonging and exaggeration of regionalism.
In 1799, George Washington died at the age of 67 at Mount Vernon, after three years of resigning his position as president.
The second person I feel that he was a great leader in the real life is Tony Fernandes. Fernandez was born in Kuala Lumpur on April 30, 1964. His parents are Dr. Stephen Edward Fernandes, and Ena Dorothy Fernandes. At the young age he always followed his mother, a dealer, to the set of distributors and Tupperware conventions. She is educated at Alice Smith School in Kuala Lumpur. Starting at the age of 12, from 1977 to 1983, he studied at Epsom College in England. He studied matriculation at the London School of Economics and completed his education in accounting. After finish a university degree from the London School of Economics in 1987, he worked briefly with Virgin Airlines as an auditor, and subsequently from 1987 until 1989, he became a financial controller to Virgin Records, a Richard Branson company in London.
When he returned to Malaysia at age 27, he became the youngest managing director at Warner Music (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd. From 1992 to 2001, he became Vice President of South East Asia Region for Warner Music Group. At Time Warner Inc. joining America Online, Fernandes left his company to pursue his dream of establishing a low fares carrier. Unfortunately, his license application was rejected by the Malaysian government.
AirAsia had been in trouble due to the overdue debt obligations. The government has tried to sell it to investors without any success. Therefore, Dr. Mahathir had advised Fernandes to buy his existing airline, rather than establishing himself. Next, Fernandes leased the house and used his entire savings to buy the company at a price. The AirAsia company then had two old Boeing aircrafts, and a debt of RM40 million. The purchase event was in time after the September 11, 2001 attacks, the worst time in the history of commercial aviation trade, causing the public feel that Fernandes had been “crazy” because there were not many people at that time who dared to board a plane. They also predicted that AirAsia would be bankrupt.
However, after a year, AirAsia was able to settle its overall debt, and no longer suffered losses. The restructuring of AirAsia’s organization with new images and concepts has brought great changes and earned profits over a short period of time. Fernandes felt that the time he had chosen to buy the AirAsia company was accurate. Fernandes believes that Malaysian passengers will welcome low flight fares to reduce time and cost, in particular, in tight economic conditions. Therefore, he imitated the Ryanair system (Ryanair who also imitate his system from Southwest Airlines in the United States), Ireland’s most successful airline in the world. Ferdandes estimates that 50 percent of low-cost airline customers are first-time passengers. Before AirAsia started a low-cost fare, Ferdandes estimated that only 6 percent of the Malaysian population had been airplane.
JUSTIFICATION OF LEADER
Tan Sri Anthony Fernandes or better known as Datok Tony Fernandes. He is an entrepreneur who has created a record by creating low-cost airlines in Malaysia and there has never been a company offering cheap flights like him. The innovator’s character in him can see when he decide for low fares to citizens with cheap and affordable prices because the percentage of Malaysians use plane as a transportation is low at that time. Here it is possible to show the innovator in him when he thinks of a change to an existing product and make changes and that changes are relevant and relalistic.
In addition, Tony Fernandes has practiced operational management in various ways including his charismatic leadership. Tony Fernandes also practices the ‘Walk and Talk’ management style. He believes that if someone sits in the office and only looks at financial reports, he will make some big mistakes. He worked on the ground or in a cabin crew. He learned a lot from working on his own company. He makes business decisions based on his own experience, observation and feedback from his crew.
Besides that, Tony Fernandes also practices the employees orientated leadership in the company. Fernandes care their employees more than their customers. He believes that when having a happy workforce, his staff will take care of his customers. Furthermore, the nature of Fernandes’s leadership is Anti-hierarchy as he encourages people and workers to speak or give ideas. A good example is how his office was built, it allowed his employees to express their opinions.
When viewed in terms of time efficiency. Tan Sri Tony Fernandes is a good man to take advantage of the opportunities and time. It coincides with the purpose of time efficiency in which entrepreneurs expand their businesses according to current trends or according to high current demand. For example, Tan Sri Tony Fernandes wisely uses the opportunities available to meet customer needs and demands. In this context, Tan Sri Tony Fernandes bought the Air Asia company and expanded the company upon receiving advice from Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad.
Failure has become a custom in the field of business. This was also faced by AirAsia CEO Tan Sri Tony Fernandes. In the past two years on December 28, 2014, a sad news has been received by him when he learned that one of AirAsia’s QZ8501 aircraft had been injured and crashed in the Karimata Strait, Indonesia. A total of 162 people were on board and all were killed. This is particularly tough when people’s perception of AirAsia is the cause of this incident and that they have underestimated this company.
However, Tan Sri Tony Fernandes thinks this is not a failure for all his efforts. He find a solutions by compensate the victims. The victims are Indonesian, South Korea, France, Malaysia, Singapore and the United Kingdom. During the investigation period, every aircraft body was checked and searched for what cause of the accident. They were informed about the latest news on the case to the heirs victims. Therefore, there are many solutions made by AirAsia’s CEO to regain its success after receiving a problem. He has practiced the right and did not choose the failure as an option. But he has chosen to avoid failure. After the incident, he ordered each of his subsidiaries to check all aircraft before departure as well as improve the safety of aircraft and passengers.
Tony Fernandez is a successful entrepreneur and has a high level of foresight. According to Tony Fernandez, “Dream The Impossible” is the success tips that he always mentioned. The proof, he buy football team West Ham United in May 2011 and he appointed manager Harry Redknapp on November 24, 2012, causing two teams to enter the Championship on April 28, 2013. Now Tony Fernandez is also the owner of a football club named Queens Park Rangers Football Club a professional football club in White City, London.
He bought AirAsia from DRB-Hicom in 2001 with only one small amount RM1 but with RM1 this will settle RM40 million of debt. Although the company owes a lot, but Tony Fernandez believes and thinks so far this company will get a great return. He leased his home and use his personal savings to maintain and expand AirAsia. His actions and thoughts can not be supported by anyone. Most of them just regard him as a crazy, hysterical, more-idealistic and more optimistic person.
After one year of operation, AirAsia has cleared all its debt of RM40 million and he continues to expand AirAsia more stable and has a large scale today. This surprised everyone who hesitated her. AirAsia is now an airline with trademark caption “Now everyone can fly” and successfully make AirAsia into the world’s best known low-cost airlines. Thus, these evidence can see that Tony Fernandez has the foresight traits and brings Air Asia to a low-cost company of success in the world.
