Is college really worth it?” This is a question many students start to ask as the college cost increases and jobs are harder to get.
Although getting accepted into a good college is a great start, the student themselves need to be motivated, talented, and creative in order to make worth of the cost and become successful. In the future, the education received from college will be very beneficial to people in many ways. College education could raise the student’s chance of economic success in the future. According to Clayton (2011), “Individuals with bachelor’s degrees earn about 60 percent more than those with just a high school diploma, who in turn earn about 40 percent more than high school dropouts.” This fact will give a strong incentive for students to want to attend college, to be more successful economically than others who are less educated. As shown, it really depends on the person to control over their education level, which will affect their amount of income. Students who receive more education are more likely to experience a better future and a better quality of life. According to Rouse (2011), “The better-educated workers not only enjoy higher income but also better health, decreased likelihood of committing crimes and less reliance on social programs.
” College does not only enable one to become economically successful, but it allows them to have a healthy life ahead of them. Despite the fact that education is beneficial to students, it is also desired by the society to make it healthier and safer. In my opinion, education will be advantageous to those who strive to do their best in their college and high school years. More education will result in a higher likelihood of a positive consequence on the students’ lives and society, as well.
College is a great place to help students explore what they want to do in the future and experience many new things. It allows people to undergo an atmosphere that is a step closer to the “real world”. According to Arnett (2011), “College allows emerging adults to try out a wide range of possible paths to their future…It’s worth the time, because the benefits last a lifetime.
” During the progression of the explorations, some instantly become aware of which path they should follow. For many others, it may only be the starting point of their explorations, yet they will leave college with a positive consequence of having a stronger understanding of themselves. Also, it is a great opportunity for people to study more specific courses they are interested in and find their suitable job. By going to college, people can change their wealth status and decide which path is best suited for them, as they experience new things during their college years. Students can be more beneficial if they find the college that best suits themselves. One way that could help narrow down the college choices is by using PACED. PACED stands for problems, alternatives, criteria, evaluate, and decision.
The problem, in this case, would be; Which college will best suit me? Alternatives will be the different choices of colleges you have in mind. My alternatives were the University of Tokyo, Boston University, and Imperial College London. The criteria will be based according to what particular things you look for in colleges.
For my colleges, these are the criteria that I have chosen to rate my three alternatives: cost, rank, the percentage of acceptance, and location. The cost and location both have a weight of 3 because it is important to me how much the college will cost and where it would take place. The percentage of acceptance has a weight of 2 because it would be nice if the percentage is high so I can get into the college more easily. The ranking of the colleges weighs the least because it does not play a major role in my process of choosing my best college I would like to attend. Using all these information, we can insert them into a Candy Bar Grid.
Overall, a college education will be beneficial to many people and they will experience a positive consequence after their years of education. Also, students can be more beneficial if they attend a college that best suits themselves. By attending college, students have a higher chance of economic success in the future, have a better quality of life, and undergo a great opportunity to explore a wide variety of possible paths.
