It is important to take into account the health and safety requirements that are put in place to ensure the safety of the children. There are many factors to take into consideration when preparing a safe environment for children.
The individual needs, age and abilities of the pupils:When setting up the environment for the children it should be taken into consideration each age of every individual child, particularly those with SEN as they may need more time to process the information given in the classroom. Children with hearing difficulties may need support of those who practice sign language in order to help them progress in the environment. A quiet area is also essential for children with hearing difficulties as the noise can get too much and may begin to annoy the child. The furniture for the children should be age appropriate so they can sit comfortably and do not spend time fidgeting around. The furniture in the classroom should be easily accessible for the child as soon as they walk into the classroom. Different sized equipment is also essential when in a early years environment such as; appropriate sized toilets and washbasins to make it easier and encourage children to go to the toilet independently. Whilst in an early years environment the flooring should be cleaning regularly with suitable cleaning products and disinfectants. If there are any cases of broken glass or hazardous materials lying around the classroom it should reported and removed as quick as possible in order to ensure the safety of the children.
There should be sufficient light for children to work without being in discomfort. Being in an environment with harsh lighting should be avoided as children may become irritated by the light, in which it is encouraged to use natural light as much as possible. Noise levels should also be considered, as children may not be able to work in loud and noisy environments. If the nursery is informed about temporary noise e.
g. a building site near the nursery, it is advised that the children be moved to a quieter location.
