Television has played an important role about gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender people. For years portrayals of gays, and lesbians on television was often negative. In modern years, this started to change, more shows present positive representation of homosexual characters. This is a transformation from being negative to becoming a good change in the world ,which affected social attitudes about gays, lesbians ,bisexual and transgender people. These changing attitudes have meant that LGBT people feel more accepted by society and comfortable now than in the past. In the past ” police routinely raided lesbian and gay bars, arresting patrons and publishing their names and addresses in the paper. Sex between two women or two men was illegal, and homosexuality was understood by psychiatrists to be a mental illness. In many places it was illegal for women to dance with women, or men with men.” -Tina Fetner. It’s bad when people treat others differently because of who they are,or who they wanna be ,or who they want to marry and have a future with whether its with the same sex or not. “In our society, where heterosexuality is the norm, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people are often subjected to stereotyped attitudes (Greene, 1994). Despite the progressive elimination of institutional barriers and the slow and difficult overcoming of obstacles, the experiences of racial, ethnic, and religious minorities suggest that individual prejudice and antipathy towards LGBT people will continue and will be difficult to eradicate” -Herek ; McLemore. Portrayals of gay people of any age has been often negative and “portrayals of young nonheterosexuals are even less common.Shows for adolescent often portray an exclusively heterosexual environment, with only occasional brief appearances by adolescent which, people were confused about their sexuality .This is important because gay adolescents often cannot get information relevant to their sexual orientation from friends and family and may use television as a source of information about gay issues. The small number of gay characters on television, and even smaller number of adolescent gay characters, is proposed to contribute to a feeling of isolation among nonheterosexual youth.” -Kielwasser ; Wolf. In today’s world is better because people that is LGBT feels better than ever and feel comfortable being around people and they get to talk about stuff that they possibly wouldn’t talk about with others . More people is coming out and they get to be who they are and don’t have to hide it anymore from their families ,friends and etc. They feel loved and have supportives on their side which feels wonderful. Having gays and lesbians people on television is good because it shows that there is people out there in the world but they are not alone. To show that anything is possible, and they can love whoever they want to be with.To show that everything is okay and don’t have to fear or worry about a thing .To show positive attitudes towards people. In this generation younger people at the age of 55 and under would have more positive attitudes about LGBT people than people that are older at least age 55 or older. People that are LGBT get to express their feeling and they will be okay. A show on television that is positive about LGBT people is good. To have an inspiration and goodness for society that anything is possible and that things can change from negative to positive for the better.
