It should be noted that this affluent man could not make any money at the beginning and even dropped out Harvard University.
At the age of 17 years old, Bill Gates formed his first company with his childhood friend, Paul Allen, named Traf-O-Data.Their goal was to build a device capable of analyzing and processing raw traffic data from traffic counters and presenting that data in a reporting format to traffic engineers.Unfortunately, on the day of the reveal, a supervisor from the County of Seattle’s traffic department came to see the device but it miserably failed to work, in fact the demo had too many bugs. Their business idea was over before it really got started. Nonetheless, this failure did not discouraged Gates, but instead gave him an invaluable lesson that he would carry forward with him. Thereafter, in 1973, Gates enrolled in Harvard University and chose a pre-law major, as it was originally intended by Gates’ parents that he follows in his father’s footsteps and become a lawyer, but he took mathematics and graduate level computer science courses. While attending Harvard University, Gates started developing Microsoft with his partner, Paul Allen.
As the company became increasingly profitable, it became obvious that Bill Gates could not continue his studies and manage a growing company at the same time. Thus, he left the university in order to fully engaged with the business at the age of 21 and he is now one of the richest men in the world with a net worth of $92.5 billion.Finally, Bill Gates encourages us to embrace failure and to learn from it, as he said once: « It’s fine to celebrate success but it is more important to heed the lessons of failure ».
