E. Preview: First I will talk about why cyberbullying is a serious issue, then I will talk about why people cyberbully each other and lastly, I will talk about how cyberbullying can be stopped, even with or without enforcing strict punishments.
Main Point 1: First let’s talk about why Cyberbullying is a serious issue in society today.
Cyberbullying makes people depressed and gives them very low self-esteem.
A young person who decides to take their life by hanging themselves or drinking poison whilst they had a bright future because they were bullied is quite disheartening and a serious issue.
Victims of Cyberbullying feel weak and unsafe.
They try to avoid school and don’t care about their grades dropping because they are stressed.
The stress of cyberbullying makes them fall sick, they get headaches and other ailments.
Since they want to free themselves from all the torment and pain, they get suicidal thoughts.
According to New York Times.com, a 13 year old girl called Megan Meier committed suicide because she felt alone and rejected, especially when her so called friend told her mean things like “the world would be a better place without you.” (Steinhauer J, 2008)
Transition: Now that we know why cyberbullying is a serious issue today, let’s talk about why people cyberbully each other.
Main Point 2: Secondly, let’s talk about the reasons why people cyberbully each other.
According to Stopbullying.gov, “Teens or kids who are quite popular like to bully others because they want to remain popular. To them, hurting people will make them powerful.” (Delete Cyberbullying, n.d.)
Also, young people with less fame think that by bullying others, it will boost their self-esteem which makes them feel good.
They feel they can fit in by hurting others.
People are really ignorant these days, they forget every action has a consequence.
According to a survey conducted for teenagers by the National Council on Crime Prevention, “about 81% of teenagers said they believe people think cyberbully is funny.” (Delete Cyberbullying, n.d.)
Since they are ignorant, they forget that their actions are hurting other people, just because they can’t see their reaction.
Bullies are able to get away with their act because no-one knows who they are, so they have more courage and freedom to do whatever they like. They know there is no way they can get caught.
“Due to social pressures, cyberbullies may think their behavior is normal and socially acceptable, especially when their friends encourage them to go on.” (Delete CyberBullying, n.d.)
According to Stopcyberbullying.org, “kids are motivated to bully others because they are angry and want revenge.” (Stop cyberbullying, n.d.). Which is quite frustrating.
They also do it because they are bored and have nothing sensible to do with their lives.
Transition: I just told you some reasons why people cyberbully each other, Let’s now look at some ways to prevent cyberbullying from increasing.
Main Point 3- Lastly, we are going to talk about a few ways cyberbullying can be stopped.
When people become educated on this issue of cyberbullying, they can help stop it.
Parents need to educate their children on cyberbullying.
They should let their children know that cyberbullying is not a good thing and has severe consequences.
They should encourage them to speak up and to talk to them, when they experience it.
They should let them know that it is not their fault and they are always there to listen.
Teens who receive mean messages and threats should keep them as a sign of proof for whatever time they feel like reporting it.
They should immediately block all access or contact with the person so that, the people won’t keep sending them more nasty messages.
They should stop sharing their personal information on the internet.
Stand up for people who are being cyberbullied. Tell the Bully to stop.
Let the bullies know that what they are doing is not nice and they should put their legs in the victims shoes and see if they would be happy.
Also, kids who bully others in school must be punished severely.
There should be a law in the school that says that anyone who decides to organize a cyber attack against another and is caught, will be expelled immediately without any consideration.
Those who decide to also participate and make someone else’s life miserable, even though they didn’t start it will be suspended for a couple of days.
On their school transcripts, it should be noted that they engaged in cyberbullying, this will make them think twice before they decide to participate again.
This will serve as caution to the other students who plan on participating.
As part of their reform and punishment, they are required to take part in community service for about a year.
Last but not the least, if someone killed themselves or tried to commit suicide but weren’t successful just because they were cyberbullied, that cyberbully should be imprisoned because it is kind of similar to taking that person’s life.
Review- Today I spoke about why cyberbully is a big issue in the world today, some reasons why people cyberbully each other and some strategic ways to stop cyberbulliying.
Call to Action- “Unless and until our society recognizes cyberbullying for what it is, the suffering of thousands of silent victims will continue.” (Anna Maria Chavez). No issue on bullying must be ignored, if we come together as a team, we can eradicate this issue of cyberbullying.
Lat thought- “Remember, it only takes a click to ruin someone’s life, so think twice before you post something mean.”(Krlyanka Gupta, 2016)
