ROLE OF GABA RECEPTORS IN EPILEPSYAbstract: GABA (Gamma Amino Butyric Acid) is the chief inhibitory neurotransmitter in the vertebrate nervous system. It acts through mainly two different types of receptors – GABAA and GABAB, and maintains the inhibitory tones which counterbalance neuronal excitation, thereby restraining a neuron from going into excessive firing. But GABAergic system performs various other roles that a simplified view of synaptic inhibition fails to completely define. Epilepsy is a pathological condition which has been associated with many factors chiefly including dysfunctional GABA receptors.

It is a chronic neurological disorder which is characterized by repeated occurrences of seizures due to abnormal or hyper-synchronous electrical activity in the brain. This review focuses on GABAergic mechanisms that result in epilepsy and accounts the specific roles of GABA receptors in epileptic predisposition. Keywords – Epilepsy, GABAA, GABAB, plasticity, hyperexcitability
