Even though many people believe public school students should not have to wear school uniforms, it is very effective for students to wear uniforms.

Proponents have researched buying regular street outfits and school uniforms and the cost of each. The proponents have proven the opponents wrong that school uniforms are less expensive than buying regular clothes.
School uniforms per school year cost about $300 dollars. Regular clothes per school year cost $600 dollars. These numbers depend on the size and age of the child the number could go up or down. School uniforms are financially cheaper for parents in the short and long term costs.
School uniforms can reduce violence and crime within the school setting. When school uniforms are enforced there is no one looking different. This also eliminates gang members flashing or wearing their gang colors. Gangs seeing one another colors being shown can cause violence and crime within school. School uniforms can reduce bullying that happens within schools.
Students who cannot afford “trendy” clothes often are those being bullied because of their appearance. Bullying can lead to the person being bullied to retaliate against the bully. Also letting students show their individuality can cause cliques and groups. This causes students to feel separated from a certain group or clique and can cause anger within an individual.
The anger results in violence to the certain group or clique. “The massacre at Columbine High School in Colorado revealed a dress code where students were allowed to wear trench coats, excessive jewelry and make-up, and eccentric hair styles and clothing. This situation develops an argument that the lack of a dress code may affect the level of safety in a school. If students were not allowed to wear coats, it would be more difficult to conceal weapons” (Eppinger).
Schools are for students to learn and not for students to be threatened because of what they wear or are not wearing. Uniforms will help protect each student from crime and violence when at school. School uniforms help students feel they belong and do not feel the need to dress a certain way to fit in. Different economic social statuses enter a school building every day. Students are on the low end of the economic social status often getting judged because they cannot afford the name brand items to wear.
If schools have students wear school uniforms this would not happen. School uniforms can make everyone at the same level and no one individual would be made fun of. “The advantage of school uniforms is for students to feel a sense of purpose. Students feel a strong sense of unity when wearing school uniforms. School uniforms give students an identity with something that is more than the individual.
Students work ethics are shown to be stronger because of their purpose they have while wearing uniforms” (Pollick). Students should not be judged for the items they wear when they go to school. School is to learn and gain knowledge, students should not have to feel as if they do not belong because of the items they are wearing on their body. School should also be a place to make friends, this should happen by the person’s personality and not by the items the student is wearing. Students wake up every morning trying to look the best for school so they can “fit in.
” If school uniforms were enforced in schools students would not have to worry about fitting in. School uniforms do not always eliminate the students who have differences but they play a big part in making the environment so students feel equal at school. School uniforms can save money and time with students and parents. Every August parents start school shopping with their child. This takes a large amount of money and time from the parents to make sure their children look good for the upcoming school year. Angella Benjamin said the following about time spent on school uniforms “the time you spend going to different stores to get the clothes your child needs could be spent doing something else. There are uniform stores available.
Walk in, get your supplies, and you are done for the day.” If schools had school uniforms parents would not have to worry about the time it will take them to get the school shopping done or how much money they would have to spend. School uniforms are a set price and can be used from year to year. Parents will be able to calculate how much money they would need to spend and have an exact amount for school clothing. In conclusion, school uniforms need to be put in every school throughout the nation.
Not only will it make a difference with the way the school is presented and its look, school uniforms will help out the students and parents, too. Students who cannot afford the trendy items to wear probably will thank every student board for voting yes to school uniforms. It protects the school, parents, and most important to the students.
