The exponential growth of technology in today’s digital world has been playing a key role in revolutionizing our educational system. One form of this technology is electronic textbooks. Teachers often face difficulties in choosing electronic textbooks for their courses or going the more classical route of using traditional textbooks. There are many advantageous and disadvantages to both forms.
In this essay I will explain how electronic textbooks are more advantageous than traditional textbooks because they’re more accessible and they provide a healthier alternative. First, I think electronic textbooks are better than traditional textbooks because they’re more accessible. But some may argue that textbooks are better still because they’re LESS distracting than electronic textbooks. In addition, traditional textbooks can provide the note taking, underlining and highlighting strategies. However, students who are engaging e-Books may find the process is fun due to e-Book attractive features such as user friendly functions, attractive graphics, enlarged text size; plug-in speakers. For example, when a student is required to refer to the textbook, he/she will find it easier to access it because it’s online, while regular textbooks can be misplaced or lost at times. Second, electronic textbooks are beneficial because they provide a healthier alternative. With the traditional textbooks, it can sometimes be a gruesome challenge because students are carrying so much weight over their shoulders.
An electronic textbook takes the pressure of heavy weight off of students’ backs. Physically, the reduced weight enables the students to grow healthily without any damaging effects such as lower back pain, poor posture, and spinal deformity over time and back problems in adulthood. But some may say that electronic textbooks require students to stare at computer screens for hours at a time. That can put a real strain on students’ eyes and can cause computer vision syndrome.
In conclusion, electronic textbooks are advantageous than traditional textbooks because they are more accessible and provide a healthier alternative. Heated debates continue on the topic of e textbooks versus regular textbooks. The advantages of electronic textbooks are groundbreaking and continue to enhance the education system. However, schools, nationwide must note that disadvantages do exist.
Perhaps school administration across the country can create solutions to make technological use more simple and affordable.
