The National Centre for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) has originally developed of The Regional Climate Model system (RegCM), where it was maintained in the Earth System Physics (ESP) section of the ICTP. Wave model of WAM is a 3rd generation wave model which had been developed by the Wave Model Development and Implementation Group (WAMDI, 1988). It was developed to resolve the known issues with first generation wave models (which erroneously used a non-existent universal high-frequency equilibrium wave spectrum), where the second generation wave models (which could not properly simulate the complex wave fields that has been generated by rapidly changing winds for instance, that occurs with hurricanes, small-scale cyclones or fronts).The model predicts the directional spectra and wave properties as well, such as significant wave height, mean wave direction and frequency, swell wave height and mean direction, and wind stress fields which corrected by including the wave induced stress and the drag coefficient of each grid point at chosen output times.

The WAM is a model integrates the basic equation of transport. It gives an evolution description of a two-dimensional ocean wave spectrum without any additional unplanned assumptions regarding the spectral shape. There are three explicit source functions describing the wind input, non-linear transfer, and white capping dissipation. In addition bottom dissipation source function and refraction terms are included in the finite-depth version of this model.

Also, it runs on a spherical latitude-longitude grid and can be used in any ocean region. The WAM has the flexibility to couple with other models such the South East Asian Ocean Model (SEAOM), the Nucleus for European Modelling of the Ocean model (NEMO), the Proud man Oceanographic Laboratory Coastal Ocean Modelling System (POLCOMS) , the High Resolution Limited Area Model (HIRLAM) , and the National Centre for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and Regional Climate Model (RegCM).
