So he begins to train Doodle to walk, run and swim. The aggressiveness of the brother and the weakness of Doodle which shows the external conflict in the story. It also cause the death of Doodle in the end. Then, the brother shows a dynamic character from he threatens Doodle that “I’ll leave you here by yourself”which is a direct characterization. The dynamic character of the brother makes him aggressive, so he fails to realize some difficulties for Doodle to make those changes. In contrast, doodle is a static character which could be learned from his reaction to narrator like he always believes in his brother and only asks his brother not to leave him when he is urged to do something he could not do. It shows a indirect characterization.

Doodle’s static character makes him subject to his brother, so he could not save his own life by rejecting his brother’s ask. Secondly, internal conflict, also known as the major conflict exists in the story. The pride of narrator drives him to ask his younger brother make changes. He does not want a feeble younger brother who cannot even walk. The more pride he get from training his brother the more he ask to Doodle. But reader can also find that the pride of the narrator is a way for him to express his love to Doodle.

In the end of the story, the pride shows dangerous. Just as the brother reveals in the story, “I did not know then that pride is a wonderful, terrible thing, a seed that bears two vines, life and death”. Thus, the external and internal conflict are entwined, which finally leads to the tragic ending of Doodle.  What’s more, The older brother in the story “the scarlet ibis” is a flat characters. He thought his younger brother is a burden, so he tried to change him. But from a certain point of view reader can understand that younger brother was also change himself for his brother, His parents had prepared a coffin for him not long after he was born. He knew his life lack much hope.

When the older brother was helping him he felt fortunate and happiness. Feel the love. So he also tried hard for his brother at the same time. But the end was pessimistic, younger brother died, and hope was broken when everyone thought there was hope for the story. The younger brother in the story teach the older brother how to love and what kind of attitude people should have when other people who around us needs help. Besides, many literary devices are applied in “The Scarlet Ibis”.

For example, symbolism is an important literary device of the story. The Scarlet Ibis symbolizes the little Doodle, which is beautiful, but its “wings were uncoordinated” and finally died and tumbled down, bumping through the tree. The Ibis is in comparison to Doodle’s defects and implies his doomed destiny. Finally Doodle died like the red Ibis, fell backwards onto the earth, bleeding from the mouth. The scarlet Ibis might be died of a storm, so the storm symbolizes the brother who urges Doodle to do things out of his abilities. Just as Daddy implies in the story, “a storm must have brought it here”.                     In the end, “The Scarlet Ibis” is a great literary work which includes different kinds of conflicts and portrays two different characters—the brother and Doodle.

The tragedy caused by the internal and external conflicts of the two characters, especially the pride of the brother. The symbolism of the scarlet ibis also implies the doomed destiny of Doodle.
