The play of “Romeo and Juliet” written by William Shakespeare, is based on a love, tragedy and hatred. The continuous conflict between the Capulet and the Montague families may have played part in the fatality of Romeo and Juliet, But the main people responsible for the death of these two star crossed lovers are; their parents, Friar Laurence and the nurse.
As children we desire for affection and attention from our parents and family members, but what happens if our family members and guardians are barely around? Well we look for love in other places, which is why Juliet felt the need to be irrational and be in a relationship with Romeo as she was craving comfort and affection. – Juliet felt the need to be secretive about her relationship between Romeo and Juliet as she was being neglected by her own parents.-” Good Father, I beseech you on my knee, Hear me with patience but to speak a word. – However her father ignores her:” I tell thee what: get thee to church o’ Thursday, Or never after look me in the face: Speak not, reply not, and do not answer me.” As a mother Lady Capulet failed to be there for Juliet as she had supported the arranged marriage between Paris and Juliet- “Hang you, you minx! You disobedient wretch! I’ll tell you now: Go to the church on Thursday, or never look on my face again!- Lady Capulet failed as a mother as she simply ignored her daughters orders and had shown Juliet no sympathy whatsoever, which is why she was disobedient to her parents.
The neglection that Juliet had received from her parents had left her with no choice but to seek advice from Friar Laurence, the next person that is responsible for the death of Romeo and Juliet. When Friar Laurence had married the young couple he had used the excuse that the marriage between the two would end the hatred between the two families- “For this alliance may so happy prove, to turn your households’ rancour to pure love”- . As a religious figure, many people come to you seeking for advice, which is what led Juliet to consult Friar Laurence. Take thou this vial, being then in bed, and this distillèd liquor drink thou off, when presently through all thy veins shall run, a cold and drowsy humor, for no pulse shall keep his native progress.”, although his intentions for giving her the potion appeared to be good it had still contributed to the death of the two lovers.
The main purpose of a nurse is to look after you and keep you in a good state of health, well the capulet family nurse hadn’t done this.-“Hie you to church; I must another way, to fetch a ladder, by which your love must climb a birds nest soon when it is dark.” The nurse had clearly knew about the relationship between Romeo and Juliet and she had encouraged the marriage of the two. However when Romeo is banished for the death of Tybalt, the nurses perspective on Romeo takes a sharp turn- “I think it’s best you marry with the county.”- This leaves Juliet feeling betrayed as the nurse had turned her down in a time where Juliet had needed her most.
Overall, In the play of Romeo and Juliet written by Shakespeare those who are to blame for the death of the young lovers were both of the families, Friar Laurence and the nurse as their actions shown throughout the play had contributed as to why Romeo and Juliet had killed themselves as there love was forbidden and cursed.
