The book I read for my book report was The City of Falling Angels, by John Berendt and published by the Penguin Group. The book was about events that happened in Venice, Italy from 1996 through 2003. It talks about the Gran Teatro La Fenice, an opera house that burned down in Venice, Italy. I did not like the book at all, it had great information about Venice, however I did not find it interesting.
I believe that it had too much history in the book for me to understand all at the same time. The book is told from the author’s point of view, and the book is based on the time he had spent in Venice. The authors purpose of writing this store was to tell about the time he had spent in Venice, after the Opera House was burned. He met many famous people from Venice, and he told a story about how he met them and how they impacted his stay in Venice. I however did not like the book itself. I think that there was too much information for me to understand, all at the same time. If he could of put less details in the book i probably would have understood it just a little bit more than I did.
The biggest part about not liking the book was the fact that he would change subjects in the book out of nowhere. That is most likely the reason that I did not understand the book or the information that was given to me. Taking in that much information and history all at the same time is a very hard task to do, especially while trying to understand all of it. I personally found the book extremely boring.
Some days it was hard for me to read just because of the context of the book. If you like history about Italy then, you may like it. But as someone who read the book for my free time it was not a good book. There were some parts of the book that i found interesting but not much. I think the most interesting part about the book was when he found out that Mario Stefani had committed suicide. Mario Stefani was a venetian poet, that had several books on poetry, he wrote about things that he felt and his life, and some important people in his life.
The book was not good to me at all. I wish that i did like it but i didn’t and it is what it is. Not every reader is going to like all the books that they read. And ones of those books that I didn’t like was this one.
Way too much history for me to take in all at the exact same time. And that is my opinion on this book. Not all books are for everyone.
