While Owen presents the speaker

While Owen presents the speaker’s isolation from the everyday world, Angelou concentrates on the hope that the speaker will overpower her oppressors.

Although in ‘Disabled’ the overall feeling is one of negativity and in ‘Still I Rise’ it is one of positivity, the similarity between the two is the sense of the prejudice the speakers both receive. In ‘Disabled’, Owen presents the speaker as being an isolated war veteran who is looked upon as if having a ‘queer disease’. He is also depicted as if being an invisible, helpless object when said to be wearing a ‘ghastly suit of grey’. The word ‘ghastly’ demonstrates he is wearing the same near white suit a ghost’s complexion is like.
