“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view – until you climb into his skin and walk around in it” (Lee) pg.
39. Scout and Jem from Harper Lee’s “To Kill A MockingBird” have to learn coming of age in not an easy way. Over the course of the book Jem and Scout realize the real meaning of the statement.
To respect everyone and to not judge someone by the way they appear. In Maycomb County, Alabama Dolphus Raymond is known as a “drunk”. He has a black wife and mixed children. Dolphus is a wealthy white man. The county believes that the brown paper sack he carries around has whiskey in it. The average white man would never interact with a black man so he pretends to be a “drunk” for his cover-up when he actually drinks Coca-Cola.
He as well as Mr. Finch believe that black people should be treated differently. Scout soon realizes the reason that Mr. Raymond drinks the Coca-Cola in the bag and acts as a drunk so he can be surrounded by the blacks with out the county judging him for it. Scout also comes to learns that there is unfair racism and persecution if you are black.
